Comprehensive Evaluation
During the initial evaluation, your provider will actively listen to your presenting symptoms and seek to understand them in the context of your psychiatric, family, medical, developmental, personal, and social history. A biopsychosocial formulation is used to determine an initial diagnosis and treatment plan. Establishing an accurate diagnosis is an essential part of the process as it is relied upon to offer treatments that are evidence-based. It is important to keep in mind that although the initial evaluation is intended to establish or rule out a diagnosis with a high degree of accuracy, many mental health conditions follow a fluctuating course, and it is often necessary to have several follow up visits to be sure of a correct diagnosis and a positive response to treatment.
Medication Management
FDA approved and empirically supported medications for depression, anxiety, PTSD, ADHD, and other mental health conditions. During your initial visit, if indicated, your doctor will discuss various medication options and collaborate with you in the decision making process of choosing the right medicine. Many psychiatric medications can take up to 3-4 weeks to reach full effect. After the initial evaluation, medication management follow up sessions generally last 20-25 minutes and are scheduled every 1 to 3 months (maximum) in most cases for appropriate medical monitoring. If your symptoms are complex or severe, you can request to meet with your doctor more frequently until you start feeling better.
Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy is an integrative approach to mental health treatment which is rooted in the therapeutic relationship between the therapist and client. Otherwise referred to as talk therapy, psychotherapy allows for an open, supportive dialogue focused on identifying and changing thought patterns/behaviors that may be affecting one’s mental wellness. Psychotherapy has proven to be effective for a wide range of mental health issues. While it may be implemented in the treatment of clinical conditions such as depression and anxiety, its use also extends to normal life transitions and stressors. There are a number of different styles of psychotherapy including cognitive-behavioral, psychoanalytic and supportive approaches, however, most psychologists use a holistic approach in treatment; in other words, they combine elements from several different approaches to meet the specific needs of their client. Whichever approach used, a psychotherapist applies evidence-based procedures to understand their clients and implement solutions.
Psychological Testing
Psychological testing is a comprehensive, diagnostic evaluation process to help clarify appropriate diagnoses (ie. Autism, Developmental Disabilities, Learning Disabilities, ADHD, OCD, Anxiety, Depression) and understand the neurocognitive profile (i.e., strengths and weaknesses) of a child. Testing helps provide a better understanding of the child’s learning and behavior. With this enhanced understanding of the child, effective interventions and techniques to better support the child can also be identified.
Pharmacogenomic Testing
pharmacogenomic testing for individuals receiving psychiatric medications. Pharmacogenomics is a relatively new field which combines the study of pharmacology and genetics to provide individualized medication options tailored to a person’s genetic makeup. This specialized form of genetic testing attempts to reduce polypharmacy and predict which medications will be the most effectively metabolized with the least negative side effects.
Laboratory Testing
laboratory testing when clinically indicated to rule out medical causes of psychiatric symptoms. Routine monitoring may be necessary for individuals with certain conditions such as eating and addictive disorders. Individuals that are on medications used to treat bipolar disorder or schizophrenia may also require routine laboratory monitoring to evaluate drug levels as well as immune cell, thyroid, liver and kidney functioning. Most individuals receiving medications to treat depression and anxiety do not require routine laboratory monitoring. In otherwise healthy individuals, a standard annual blood panel is adequate and may be performed by a primary care physician.
